Should I stay or should I go?

When all of this Covid-19 mess started, we asked God do we stay or go?  We felt confident God was telling us to stay. Each day and week after that, we kept asking if we were sure that was the right choice. We watched as many missionaries chose to go home or were told to come home but most decided to stay. Still, we kept asking ourselves what are we going to do?  It seems crazy to just sit here in our home everyday and take our Khmer classes online, we could do that back home in the US. As time has passed here in Cambodia, we have been seeing less issues with the virus here than in the US. We had a travel restriction for only a few days and every store has toilet paper so we feel we have been better off here than in the US. As we see less restrictions and less cases of Covid-19 being diagnosed in Cambodia and many neighboring countries, God put it on our hearts to help those that are out of work. We started by handing out rice and sharing the Gospel to tuk-tuk (Cambodian taxi) drivers. The more we reached out to those in need, the more we could see the need. So far we have been able to provide food for over 110 families. This evening, we went to visit a family that we were told was in need of help. This is a family that has a daughter in Zoe’s youth group at church. In fact, we told you a few months ago about Zoe inviting a young girl to play games with her youth group in the park. This is the same girl.  She started coming to church and accepted Christ recently!  Her home is very near where we live on a very rough and dusty red clay road. Her family of four lives in a very small, one-room wooden house with no electricity, water or bathroom. They rent the property for 30 dollars a month. We met her mother and she brought chairs from the neighbor’s house so we could sit and talk. We placed the food on a small table out in front of the house and talked with her mother. Her mother was a chef in a restaurant and lost her job when the restaurant had to shut down due to lack of tourists and her father is a tuk tuk driver with no work either. As we talked, they shared that they only have an income from her father’s part time job at the moment. We prayed with the mother and daughter and told them that we would bring them food again, if their situation did not change. As I was leaving, God spoke to me to give her money for her rent. I gave the money to Zoe and her group leader that was helping interpret for us. They went back and gave the money to the mother and she burst into tears and hugged Zoe. Khmer people are not usually huggers so this was a huge surprise. She then told them that they did not have food to eat yesterday and today. She said her husband had only eaten rice with salt. As we walked back to leave I thought, “OK God, I get it why you had us stay”  You know, it is not the grand, noble or big things we do, It’s the little things that we do as His hands and feet. The things we do when HE speaks and we listen. I keep thinking how good God is, He pursued this young girl! He knew months ago what this family would be facing. He knew she needed the Bread of Life most of all! He brought this girl to Freedom Church where her family’s needs could be met in such a time as this. God works in all of our lives the same way. He is the God who sees. He sees each of us right where we are. Right in the midst of our circumstances. Why do we worry? Lord, help me to see the needs around me and not focus on the mountain in front of me.  I know you will move the mountain if I will just want to follow closely to you.
